This article will help travelers understand what they want in a holiday. My idea of a great holiday is to learn, understand and be visually stimulated by the scenery and the people I meet along the journey. Capturing that experience through photographs is such a bonus.
Time, income, interests and health all vary over your lifetime and these are important considerations that determine the selection of your ultimate travel destination.
It is also crucial to understand the type of traveller you are and what your expectations are for your next vacation.
Recently, I met an Australian woman in Northern Vietnam. We both hired the same guide for a tour through traditional areas of Vietnam. Specifically, we were to walk between Hill Tribe villages and stay in farm, home stay accommodation. Unfortunately, Kathy, who was extremely unfit, refused to take part in the hike when she realised we had to actually “walk” between the villages” instead; she opted to stay in a local guesthouse.
Kathy said she did not have any interest in seeing the local Hill Tribe People because the houses were primitive, it was too cold, the streets were dirty and she would prefer to sit and read her new book, “Fifty Shades of Grey” beside the fire. She was also extremely disappointed that the shopping and night life of downtown Sapa did not match that of Sydney.
So, the guide and I left Kathy to her book and the comforts of the guesthouse. We had a wonderful time exploring the villages and farm life and staying with the local people, who were so welcoming.
Unfortunately, Kathy had not taken the time to think about the type of traveler she was and her vacation expectations.
